AirSewa complaint: how to complain against an airline in India
For air passengers in India with a complaint against IndiGo, Air India, Akasa, SpiceJet or any airline about a cancellation, delay, denied boarding, downgrade or refund
Complain to the airline first. DGCA's CAR Series M Part IV makes every airline appoint a Nodal Officer and an Appellate Authority and list them on its website. If that fails, file on AirSewa, the Ministry of Civil Aviation portal and app, or on CPGRAMS. Cancellation compensation can reach Rs 10,000.
The 30-second answer
- Complain to the airline first. Every airline must run an online complaint system that gives each complaint a unique reference number, under para 3.10.5 of DGCA CAR Section 3, Series M, Part IV.
- Escalate inside the airline. Each airline must appoint a Nodal Officer and an Appellate Authority and display their details on its website (para 3.10.4).
- File on AirSewa or CPGRAMS. AirSewa is the Ministry of Civil Aviation's grievance portal and app. CPGRAMS also takes airline grievances. Both take the grievance up with the airline.
- Still not satisfied? DGCA's rule says you are free to complain to any statutory body or court, for example the consumer commission on e-Jagriti.
How do I complain against an airline in India?
Complain to the airline through its online grievance system and keep the reference number. If it does not help, go to its Nodal Officer, then its Appellate Authority, both listed on the airline's website. You can also file on AirSewa or CPGRAMS, which take the grievance up with the airline.

When does an airline have to pay compensation for a cancelled flight?
DGCA's CAR Series M Part IV says an airline that cancels with less than 24 hours' notice must give an alternate flight you accept, or pay up to Rs 10,000 on top of a full refund. In detail: if the airline tells you at least two weeks before departure, it must arrange an alternate flight or a refund as acceptable to you. If it tells you less than two weeks before and up to 24 hours before the scheduled departure, it must offer an alternate flight or a refund, as acceptable to you. If it does not inform you in line with those rules, or you miss a connecting flight booked on the same ticket number, it must give an alternate flight you accept, or pay compensation on top of the full refund, set by block time as in the table above. If you had already reported for the flight, it must also give you meals and refreshments while you wait. No compensation is payable if you gave no email or phone number when booking, or if the cancellation was caused by extraordinary circumstances beyond the airline's control, such as weather, air traffic control, security risks or strikes.
What do I get if my flight is delayed?
Under DGCA's CAR, free meals and refreshments start at a 2 hour delay for flights with a block time up to 2.5 hours, 3 hours for flights from 2.5 to 5 hours, and 4 hours for longer flights, if you checked in on time. If a domestic flight is expected to be delayed more than 6 hours, the airline must offer an alternate flight within 6 hours or a full refund. If the delay is more than 24 hours, or more than 6 hours for a flight due to leave between 2000 and 0300 hrs, you must be offered hotel accommodation with transfers. The CAR does not set cash compensation for a delay, and the airline is not bound by these facilities if the delay comes from extraordinary circumstances.
What if I am denied boarding or downgraded?
If you are denied boarding against your will on an overbooked flight, DGCA's CAR says no compensation is due if the airline puts you on a flight leaving within one hour of your original time. Otherwise it pays 200% of the booked one-way basic fare plus airline fuel charge, up to Rs 10,000, if the alternate flight leaves within 24 hours, or 400%, up to Rs 20,000, if it leaves later. If you do not take an alternate flight, you get a full refund plus 400%, up to Rs 20,000. If you are downgraded on a domestic flight against your will, the airline must reimburse 75% of the ticket cost including taxes. Compensation can be paid in cash, by bank transfer, or as travel vouchers only if you sign an agreement.
Common problems and what to do
My refund has not come
The Ministry of Civil Aviation told the Lok Sabha on 2 April 2026 that under the revised refund CAR, Series M Part II, in effect from 26 March 2026, the refund process is to be completed within 14 days (answer to question 6226). Complain to the airline with your PNR, then file on AirSewa or CPGRAMS if it is still not paid. The airline is responsible for refunds even when you booked through a travel agent or portal, as the PIB release of 2 February 2023 notes.
The airline says it was weather or air traffic control
Paras 1.4 and 1.5 of the CAR excuse compensation for extraordinary circumstances, including weather, air traffic control and security risks. The airline carries the burden of proving when it told you about a delay (para 3.4.5). Ask it in writing for the reason and the time it informed you.
I cannot find the Nodal Officer
The CAR requires airlines to display the Nodal Officer and Appellate Authority conspicuously on their website. Look for a page named grievance redressal, customer care or passenger charter. If you still cannot find it, file on AirSewa and say so.
